FAST FACT FRIDAY #18 - TV

This fast fact Friday is about TV.  Just for fun, I went back to see some of the best of the 1980s TV shows.  Here are a few that I watched and loved:

Cheers
The Cosby Show
Doogie Howser MD
Family Matters
The Golden Girls (still watch re run sometimes)
Growing Pains
Murphy Brown
Perfect Stangers
Saved by the Bell
Who's the Boss?
90's???
Full House
Prince of Bel Air

1.  If you could be a character in a TV show, who would you be? (You would live, dress, act like them.)
Oh man!  I don't know.  On the spot, I would say Rebecca Donaldson on Full House was always beautiful and dressed nicely and professionally.  She carried herself well and always smiled.  Good choice?

2.  What TV family best describes your family?
Another hard one.  Every family has a problem and fixes it.  I guess I would say Growing Pains... at least by the sound of the name it really sounds like what our house is like.  We disagree and argue, but then get along better ... not just in 1/2 hour!!!

3.  What was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon as a kid?
Oh, I loved the Smurfs!  Such a fun cartoon!

4.  What reality TV show would you want to be in?  (Even if you don’t watch it.)
Biggest Loser.  LOVE that show and would love the opportunity to get my butt kicked and puke in a bowl there!

5.  What was your favorite TV theme song as a kid?
Friends theme song has been my favorite since High School.  Before that it was probably Growing Pains or Full House.

March 18th - When asked for his homework yesterday, Dawson said, "The leprechaun stole it." I thought that his teacher was sending homework on Friday for spring break instead. This morning I found his homework. I told Brandon that Dawson is in deep doo-doo, related the story, and his reply, "And YOU believed him!"

April -

April 3rd - Kate today: "Dad, can you ground Dawson for the rest of my life?"

August -

August 15th - Found a new tactic to getting kids motivated to clean. Making bets that it will help you too. Have them watch 1 episode of HOARDERS. Their eyeballs will get big and you can then ask, "See why we HAVE to clean up and not save EVERYTHING???"

September 21st - I have always thought it best to tell it like it is, not beat around the bush, and truly adopted the motto that honesty is the best policy. After this last week, I think that I better adopt the motto "If you can't say somethin' nice, don't say anything at all!" Hopefully the children will follow suite.

December -

December 1st - Shopping at JCP with my neighbor, Kate says, "Anya, you just have to get it all. My mom says that if you don't just buy it all that it won't be there tomorrow and it's won't be at any other day either. Well, maybe Walmart."

NEVER FORGET

We remember. Events that others remember. The attack on Pearl Harbor. Assassination of John F. Kennedy. Fall of the Berlin Wall. Events that changed history.

In 2001, we were happily married and living with Brandon's parents. Faith was almost 1 year. I was working at ISU Library part time, and Brandon was going to school full time.

The morning for me started off very routinely. Getting dressed and ready for work, I was watching A Baby Story on the TV. And then I got a call from a dear friend, Kristy, asking if I was watching the TV ... the news ... the horror unfolding. I really didn't know what she was talking about.

Brandon was at the ISU library waiting to get in the building to study for the day. He hears other students talking about a plane crashing into a tower. He didn't realize the impact that this would have. Class schedule that day included history. His teacher said that this was history in the making and sent the class home to watch the news.

We watched the news for days on end, soaking in the new information and really praying. It was all so hard to wrap your head around this tragic event. It truly affected everyone's life.

The famous picture

For the husband who told his wife I love you one last time before his plane went down in a field, for the wife who stopped in the stairs to call her husband to say I will love you forever, for the mothers and fathers who kissed their kids goodbye the morning they died, for the policemen who rushed in with the firemen to help get others out only to die themselves, for the soldiers who fought back and lost their lives. Today, tomorrow, ten years from now, we will remember♥

GENTLE REMINDERS

I saw this video again today and just couldn't help but post it. I love, love, love this talk and the message. In times of adversity and trial, we can remember to laugh and keep an eternal perspective.

THE JOLLEY JOURNALS - MODERN CONVENIENCES

I found a new website called "This is Me Challenge." The challenges are geared toward family history. So, I have decided to take the challenge and begin. (I am starting at 1 and working my way up! Hope you enjoy!)

Challenge #1 If you were forced to go back in time to the olden days, but were allowed to take 10 modern conveniences with you, what would you take?

1) Washing machine
Pre treating, spot treating, washing, rinsing, wringing. Yeah, without a washing machine, this is not for me!

2) Flushing toilets
I love having flushing toilets. I think that this would be hard to give us.

3) Electric heat
I'm sure that I would learn how to be a better fire builder, but I think I'd rather settle for heat that I can flip on with a switch.

4) Oven
I have had to go without one for a week, and it was the pits. Not having a microwave would be hard too, but doable.

5) Libraries
Have I mentioned that I LOVE books? No really, I would die if I couldn't get my hands on different printed books.

6) Click pens and pencils
In order to forgo the phone and still stay in touch with everyone, I would love to have a pen and pencil.

7) Medicine
I don't know about you, but I really like being able to take something for a headache.

8) Hot water
After doing what the pioneers did, wouldn't you just love to have a hot shower or bath? I know that I would have really missed that!

9) Camera
I really do love my camera. But more than that, being able to document for my grandkids and their grandchildren is very special.

10) Vehicles
Purely for selfish reasons, I would love to be able to have a vehicle for 'long' trips!

THE JOLLEY JOURNALS - PRAYER

Posts have been sparse this week, due to the fact that I only had 4 days to prepare a talk for sacrament meeting. My topic was the power of prayer. I thought that I would share a few excerpts with you:

I asked several friends, "What is prayer?" Here are two of my favorite answers.

“Prayer is a daily PPI. It is an opportunity to talk with God and reflect on what I can do better tomorrow.”

“Prayer is a way to open your heart to God, let him in your life in an intimate way, and tell him all your fears and worries, gratitude and thankfulness. Prayer is one of those things that is experienced differently by everyone but is a universal way of talking to the one who created each of us!”

.......................

President Kimball taught: “No mother would carelessly send her little children forth to school on a wintry morning without warm clothes to protect against the snow and rain and cold. But there are numerous fathers and mothers who send their children to school without the protective covering available to them through prayer—a protection against exposure to unknown hazards, evil people, and base temptations.”

We are taught to “pray always to the Father in my name.”

Once a Primary teacher asked a little boy if he said his prayers every night.

“Yes,” he replied.

“And do you always say them in the morning, too?” the Primary teacher asked.

“No,” the boy replied. “I ain’t scared in the daytime.”

Fear of the dark should not be our only motivation to pray.

............................

We sometimes forget that prayer should not be our last resort, but our first priority.

President Hinckley said, Believe in prayer and the power of prayer. Pray to the Lord with the expectation of answers. I suppose there is not a man or a woman in this entire congregation today who doesn’t pray. I hope that is so. The trouble with most of our prayers is that we give them as if we were picking up the telephone and ordering groceries- we place our order and hang up. We need to meditate, contemplate, think of what we are praying about and for and then speak to the Lord as one man speaketh to another. “Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord” (Isa. 1:18). That is the invitation. Believe in the power of prayer- it is real, it is wonderful, it is tremendous.”

My testimony of prayer is that it is real and that God hears and answers our prayers. Prayer changes who we are and what we will become. "Prayer changes things."
