THE REST OF SEPTEMBER

Faith started Girls on the Run in September. This is a program where the girls learn to run and also learn about health and wellness and positive girl messages. At the end of the program, they run a 5K. It is a very good program for 3rd to 5th graders. They meet twice a week to do their lessons and exercises. We are hoping that Faith will choose to do it again next year.

We had service club for the kids where we planted a tree in our neighborhood. The kids have really taken to this project. This year, they were right in the dirt, digging. We hope that the neighborhood really enjoys the shade that it will one day provide.

The kids had a joint birthday party with friends. We have done this 2 years in a row and it might continue to be a tradition as long as the kids have most of the same friends. It's a lot of fun and easier to put a big effort into 1 party instead of 2.

The Relief Society Broadcast was simply amazing. President Monson's talk was probably my favorite. Here is the short story that he started with:

A young couple, Lisa and John, moved into a new neighborhood. One morning while they were eating breakfast, Lisa looked out the window and watched her next-door neighbor hanging out her wash.

“That laundry’s not clean!” Lisa exclaimed. “Our neighbor doesn’t know how to get clothes clean!”

John looked on but remained silent.

Every time her neighbor would hang her wash to dry, Lisa would make the same comments.

A few weeks later Lisa was surprised to glance out her window and see a nice, clean wash hanging in her neighbor’s yard. She said to her husband, “Look, John—she’s finally learned how to wash correctly! I wonder how she did it.”

John replied, “Well, dear, I have the answer for you. You’ll be interested to know that I got up early this morning and washed our windows!”

Tonight I’d like to share with you a few thoughts concerning how we view each other. Are we looking through a window which needs cleaning? Are we making judgments when we don’t have all the facts? What do we see when we look at others? What judgments do we make about them?

That sums up the rest of September. I look forward to sharing October with you as well!
